October 2014                                                                   NEXT MEETING:  November 5, 2014

Comrades,

I was a little late getting the October meeting started but we still finished up by 7:50 so I
guess that wasn’t too bad.  Food for after the meeting was provided by Chuck Bagwell.  It
was delicious, Thanks Chuck!

At the district meeting September 27th it was brought up that the IRS is becoming more
diligent at checking VFWs and other non-profits to make sure they comply with all rules.  We
have had some problems with workers who would like to skirt the tax issues.  Starting
immediately no one will be paid for any work (hall guard, cleaning etc.) unless a W-9 is
turned in to our quartermaster.

The car show went well.  We had about 50 cars at the event which was about 20 fewer
than last year.  The weather, which was overcast and looked like rain all day, probably was
the reason for the smaller turnout.  We still made a decent profit.  The weather didn’t
dampen the enthusiasm; Bob is already talking about how he is going to do it next year.

The parade honoring WWII, Korean and Vietnam War Veterans was great.  We had 7
members who rode the 40 & 8 train from St. Mary’s park to the Monroe’s VFW post.  At the
post there was a program for all the veterans followed by a dinner.

Mason will have home football games on 10-10, and 10-24 at 7:00.  We will be raising the
flags at these games.  We always can use help.  Be there 15 minutes before the game.  In
warm weather wear your uniform shirt and hat.  In cooler weather you can wear a dark
blue jacket and your hat.  Tell the person at the gate you are there to raise the flag and you
can walk right in and go to the pole.

Remember we still need more people at our funerals so if you would like to be put on a call
list let me know.

As usual if you know of a serviceman or woman who is coming home or deploying let me
know and we will post their names on the marquee for a few days.

The post will be sponsoring a Blood Drive October 20.  Volunteers will be needed.

We will be in a parade at Luna Pier on November 8th.  Wear your uniform.  I am not sure
yet what time we will meet at the post.  I will know by the next meeting so try to attend or
give me a call in November.

Remember Veteran’s Day Dinner will be Saturday, November 8.  Cocktail hour and Hors d’
oeuvres will start at 6pm.  Dinner and our guest speaker is next followed by the DJ and
music for dancing.  Tickets are $15/person and can be bought after our next meeting or
calling me at (734) 243-1645.

Hope to see you November 5
